Congratulations to all the newly engaged couples out there! Just letting you know that I will be showcasing my work at the International Bridal Expo on Sunday January 30th at the Hampton, VA Howard Johnson from 1-5 PM. Blevins’ Family Portraits in Chesapeake, VA

The peak of our fall colors in Hampton Roads have come and gone since this shoot just barely over a week ago. I’m glad that this was such a great family to work with. Their youngest son gave me some funny expressions that I wasn’t expecting most of the shoot, which made it fun to work with him. I met with this little family at Oak Grove Lake Park in Chesapeake, VA - the fall colors are absolutely gorgeous this time of year! The little baby was so great – he never cried during our shoot except when we had him sit up with the pumpkin and he lost his balance. That was the first time he actually sat up for any amount of time and his parents were thrilled to watch him do that! Whitney + David Engagement Portraits

I first met Whitney a few years ago when she modeled for the Virginia Beach Photography Club as a bride for the Portrait and Wedding Photography group. I was pleasantly surprised when she asked me to shoot her wedding next year. Whitney has the most beautiful long hair and a killer smile and her fiance David is a great looking guy, too, so they make a very cute couple! Holly + Bob Wedding Photography

Holly & Bob were married on October 3rd during one of the heaviest rainy weeks we have ever seen! They had plans to have an outdoor ceremony and reception at the Fred Huette Center in Norfolk with a very unique approach to serving the food: the guests would enjoy their choice of food in a picnic style fashion, complete with picnic baskets and blankets! The baskets of food were still prepared for the guests but the rain kept everyone from enjoying their meal in a true picnic fashion. But that was no matter for Bob & Holly because they continued to beam throughout the day, which just goes to show that love conquers all! Ashley and her mom came down from Richmond, VA just to have her senior portraits taken with me on the beach! As I got to know Ashley she told me that she’s going to study theatre after high school and that she has the lead role in the school play this year. When I learned about that, her mom and I asked her to try a few poses that her character, an actress struggling with making the move into broadway or hollywood, might try. These family portraits were taken on what will probably be one of the last warm beach days of 2010. The little baby girl seemed to be so intrigued by the camera that she didn’t smile for me at all! And according to her parents she’s quite the smiley little baby – they even pulled out their camera phones to show me her smiling shots… she’s so cute! I can’t always get the little ones to smile but that’s OK because I think we still got some great shots together! Rusnak Children’s Portraits on the Beach

I had the pleasure of working with this family a couple of years ago and since then they had another baby. So mom contacted me again to schedule a shoot with just the children this time. One interesting fact about the picture of the little boy in the blue sky is that I took this same shot with his sister the first time I met with them – and that was the first time I shot an image like that! So it was fun to take it again with this little guy. Ever since that first blue sky shot I’ve taken many others just like it and it never gets old!

Jackson’s Newborn Portraits

I have been anxiously waiting to blog about this little guy ever since I shot his portraits. His parents are Justin and Andrea, friends of mine from Atlantic Shores Baptist Church where I go to church. In 2009 they were told by the doctors that they couldn’t have children. So they began the long process of adoption, filling out all the paperwork and getting interviewed by the adoption agency. However, just before Christmas last year they were surprised to find that they were, in fact, pregnant!!! It was a miracle that shocked the entire church and all of their friends and family. Jackson was born August 10, 2010 and I was privileged enough to take his first portrait session in the home. I had a great time shooting Lou & Lauren’s wedding. The weather was perfect for a wedding on the beach and this couple couldn’t be more in love if you tried to find one! We all had a great time getting ready at Lou’s home and we took off for the local park to get some great shots with Lauren and her girls. Once we got to the beach, the Grand Affairs staff was ready to go and things went off without a hitch. After the ceremony we headed to Grand Affairs for dinner and the food was amazing! This was by far the largest group of people I have had the pleasure of working with on the beach this summer! With 22 people in all, that’s pretty challenging for any photographer to get a nice group shot and maintain the level of patience for everyone. Nevertheless, these families were great to work with! Everyone kept smiling through every shot and took everything in stride. They have been friends for years, so all the kids grew up together and it almost feels like they are one big family! Hegwood Family Portraits on the Beach

I really wanted to try out a new location in Norfolk, VA by the jetties – an old place to those of us who have lived around here our whole lives, but it was new for me because I’ve never shot over there before! I loved the blue skies that we got here but I wasn’t too crazy about all the sea weed that had washed up on shore. The Hegwood Family was vacationing in Williamsburg, VA but wanted to come to Hampton Roads for some beach portraits. So this location was slightly closer coming from that side of town and they said they were up for anything.

This family was great to work with. Their two boys were full of life and they were up for shooting anything – I love that age! I didn’t know I would be shooting Superman, but nonetheless the oldest boy took off right in the middle of our shoot! Check out the picture below! I had a fantastic time working with Chelsea! Ididn’t know this until the time of the shoot, but I realized I was in for a real treat when she told me that she brought her prom dress for one of the outfits that she wanted to wear during her session. I wanted to juxtapose the dress against something with a lot of harsh texture, and there is a great bunker on the beach that came to mind (it’s a top secret location – lol). The images with her dress turned out exactly the way I wanted them to and I was thrilled to see it all come together. Congratulations to Vince & Kendal who were married on May 29, 2010 at the Triple R Ranch in Chesapeake, VA. They had a beautiful ceremony and were surrounded by close friends and family. The ranch holds a special place in my heart, too, because that’s where my parents met! I went to camp when I was a boy and I worked there from 1993-1998. This wedding was fun for me to shoot since I knew so many people and I was glad to be a part of it with Vince & Kendal. Not even lightning and thunder could keep this family from taking their portraits on the beach! We had a great time on the beach and we even managed to get some nice lighting before things got really dark from the incoming storms. Their daughter was a pleasure to work with – I love it when the little ones say “cheese” for the camera… too cute!

I had a great time working with the Childs’ family. We shared a few laughs at the end of our shoot when the crabs started to attack! Nikki let out a fierce yell when one crab crawled over her feet and Bobby thought it would be a good idea to catch one. As you can see at the end of the shoot both of them paid the price and got pinched by the crab – and I managed to get a few shots. Here are a few of my favorites from the shoot. Enjoy!
